Developing a career in the Public Service

Developing a career in the Public Service

The Public Service Act outlines principles and values that guide all public servants, fostering a unified Public Service that is dedicated to serving the community.

When government priorities shift or unexpected events occur, public servants must respond swiftly to ensure uninterrupted service delivery across the Cook Islands and its communities. By transferring employees' existing skills, knowledge, and experience across the Public Service, agencies can quickly mobilise workers.

The nature and complexity of assignments can vary based on the situation, context, and specific needs. Permanent public servants may have opportunities to gain new experiences and perspectives through short-term or long-term secondments and assignments.

Temporary assignments allow an employee's core employment terms to remain unchanged, even as the location, hours, and nature of their work may temporarily shift. However, fixed-term employees, consultants, and contractors do not currently qualify for secondments or temporary assignments.

Working in the Public Service

When considering a temporary move, either within your current organisation or to a different agency, it's wise to reflect on your next career step. If you're unsure about your career development plan, we encourage you to have an open discussion with your manager, a trusted advisor, or your organisation's human resources team.

They can help you explore options and identify the right opportunities, whether that's pursuing a clear path you have in mind or exploring new ideas.
